Yellow Fever Prevention

The most effective method of Yellow fever prevention is vaccination. The vaccine for Yellow fever was developed in 1937 by Max Theiler, a south African/Swiss virologist. The vaccine contains a virus known as 17D which is live but has been reduced in strength. The vaccine has been used on millions of people with a 90% rate of developing a sizeable immunity after just one dose.

There can be allergic reactions to this vaccine which stems from the eggs in which the virus is grown. Those with allergies or low immunities should discuss this with their doctor before they are vaccinated.

There are other methods of Yellow fever prevention, yet none of these are effective enough to compare with vaccination. Other methods include minimising the chances of mosquito bites as mosquitoes carry the virus. This means using insecticides, wearing protective clothing and putting up screens and mosquito nets around doors, windows and beds. These are never 100% secure and you’ll not be able to stay in these preventative devices all the time. It is recommended that you do not rely solely on these methods of yellow fever prevention, and ensure you are treated every 10 years with the Yellow fever vaccine.
